Technical Innovation
FoxHollow Technologies develops and markets treatment solutions for patients suffering from cardiovascular disease. Currently, the company’s product portfolio includes a technology to remove hardened plaque from arteries of the leg, and a device to remove blood clots from both arteries in the leg and in the heart.FoxHollow’s SilverHawk® Plaque Excision System received FDA clearance in 2003 to treat patients suffering from peripheral artery disease (PAD). An estimated 8 to 12 million people in the U.S. alone have PAD1, a condition that occurs when arteries in the legs are blocked by a hardened build up of fatty deposits called plaque. Unlike other methods for restoring blood flow, the SilverHawk System is the only FDA-cleared device that removes the plaque from arteries and restores blood flow to the affected area of the leg, feet and toes, instead of simply compressing it against the vessel wall. Multiple vessels and plaque lesions can be treated with a single device.
When PAD worsens, critical limb ischemia (CLI) can develop. Patients with CLI are at significant risk for amputation. In the U.S. and Europe, an estimated 1.5 to 2 million patients suffer from CLI.2 Each year, at least 150,000 amputations are performed as a result of tissue loss from CLI.2 In addition to its use for the treatment of mild and moderate PAD, the SilverHawk is being used to help patients with CLI avoid bypass surgery and amputation.
In addition to the SilverHawk, FoxHollow also markets a device called the Rinspirator® Thrombus Removal System, which is used to rinse and aspirate blood clots (thrombus) that obstruct blood flow in diseased areas of the heart and legs. In addition, the Rinspirator allows the delivery of physician-specified solutions to the treatment site.Scientific Discovery
Through strategic scientific collaborations with companies such as Merck & Co., Inc., FoxHollow is targeting a fundamental understanding of vascular disease. We are working towards the identification of novel plaque biomarkers that will help accelerate the development of pharmacogenomic diagnostics and ultimately drugs for cardiovascular disease. FoxHollow’s dedication to this endeavor will transform the way we discover, benefiting both the patients and the research community supporting them.Corporate Headquarters
FoxHollow maintains its headquarters and manufacturing facility in Redwood City, California. The company was founded by Dr. John Simpson, a clinician and entrepreneur with a long track record of developing unique medical technologies. In addition to FoxHollow, Dr. Simpson was the founder of Advanced Cardiovascular Systems (acquired in 1984), Devices for Vascular Intervention (acquired in 1990) and Perclose (acquired in 1999).
